The Artist:
Sandra McKenzie Schmitt (1943) USA Sandra McKenzie Schmitt
was born in Tampoco Illinois. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in 1961
from Lindenwood College for Women, St. Charles, Missouri. In 1959 Schmitt
studied art at University of Illinois, Champaign, and in 1960 at the University
of Wisconsin, Madison, and University of Iowa. In 1964 Ms. Schmitt earned
her Master of Arts in Intaglio, where she worked under the master Mauricio
Lasansky. By 1964 Sandra McKenzie Schmitt earned 30 hours of post-graduate
study. In 1973, she established herself as a figurative sculptor and had
her first showing of that work which was in New York City. In 2000 she
was awarded a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramic Sculpture from Bradley University,
Peoria Illinois. Ms. Schmitt's art's emphasis is ceramic sculpture with
additional work in bronze, stone carving, and metal fabrication.
Awards and Publications:
Ms. Schmitt's work has won national prizes and has published
nationally. Publications and awards include: New York Art Review, 1991,
1992; Who's Who in Interior Decorating, 1991; Design Through Discovery,
Prentice Hall, 1985. Shows and Exhibits Include: Beginning in 1988 to
1992 Sandra McKenzie Schmitt owned her own retail gallery in Frenchtown,
New Jersey. She relocated to Richmond, Virginia from 1992 – 1994, and
presently owns McKenzie River Pottery, a gallery in Washington, Illinois
which serves as both her studio and gallery. Here she represents clay
artists across the United States and from the central Illinois. – As for
her own work specifically, she is an honored fine artist. Sandra McKenzie's
sculpture is currently represented in over twenty galleries throughout
the United States. She has been honored with a plethora of invitational
exhibitions, including: The 2009 - Community Connections, at the Peoria
Art Guild in Peoria Il. There she was a featured artist with Elijah Sansom
whose photographs document more than two decades of historically significant
events in Peoria's African American cultural history. Schmitt's sculptures
reflect a sense of pride and are influenced by everyday people in the
community. Earlier exhibits and invitational include the honors listed

Artwork:
Ms. Schmitt's sculptures are individually made. Each art
piece is unique unto itself. Sculptures range in size from ten inches
to three feet. The works are made of red stoneware fired to cone 5 or
grey stoneware fired in a cone 9 gas reduction kiln. Most pieces are safe
for both indoor and outdoor display.
