Youngquist,
Betsy: 1965, USA
The Artist:
Betsy Youngquist was born in Rockford, IL in 1965. She earned
her bachelors degree in art from North Park University in Chicago in 1988,
and her masters degree in art education from UW-Madison in 1992. When
in grade school Betsy Youngquist co-authored and illustrated a book for
children The Two Friends. In 1998 the Illinois Committee for the National
Museum of Women in the Arts exhibited a beaded painting, Flight of the
Zebra. Eight years later Youngquist's animal forms became three dimensional,
had human glass eyes and human feet, and her work was exhibited at the
Smithsonian Craft Show in Washington DC.
Betsy Youngquist's work has come full circle. The human
heads of her earlier paintings have found their way into sculptures as
antique doll parts. What begins as unintentional connection between human
and animals morphs into an explosion of texture and color. And, connection
becomes obvious. For Ms. Youngquist, Anthropomorphism takes root. Animals
are invested in her experience and she believes we are in theirs. " ...My
life as an artist, and my story as a person are intertwined with the significance
of the animals that cross my path. ...Sometimes I think we want to see
ourselves in these creatures in order to hear the messages they bring."
Exhibitions, Publications, and Honors:
Youngquist's work is exhibited in galleries, juried exhibition
and art fairs Internationally. Her art has recognized by the award prizes
and is published in books, catalogues and periodicals.

The Art:
Betsy Youngquist's mixed media beadwork reflects a fascination
with the intersection of humans, animals, and mythology. Stemming from
a life-long love of all creatures great and small, Betsy Youngquist's
work weaves together the human and animal spirit through a surrealistic
lens. When creating her embellished objects, Ms. Youngquist often collaborates
with sculptor R. Scott Long in designing and constructing the forms. Each
artwork starts as a unique carving. The surfaces are encrusted with beads
and found materials in a mosaic process, sometimes incorporating fragments
of antique porcelain dolls. Contact us,
