Retro
and Sixties
This category includes artworks both representational
and abstract, the majority of which are original
limited edition prints. Original limited edition prints came
into their own as attractive collector art in the 1960's, and continue
to remain exciting to art collectors today. Throughout the decades, many
of the greatest artists have been master printmakers, turning out a body
of outstanding prints in addition to their paintings and drawings. Undoubtedly
the two greatest printmakers of all were Durer and Rembrant, with Picasso
fairly close behind. Besides these three there are hundreds of outstanding
printmakers from Goya through to Whistler; including artists Daumier,
Matisse, Chagall, Miro, and today's newly discovered masters.
In the 1960's the very best print dealers began focusing
on buying and selling art in graphic media. Less expensive than paintings,
the fine prints of this period are equally good barometers for one the
'hottest' art markets of our times. Prints, comparable to paintings and
drawings in terms of artistic merit and investment prospects, remain within
reach of hundreds of thousands of collectors, who otherwise would not
own works by these artists.
During this period, the sixty's through the mid eighties,
the art world witnessed an explosion of artistic expression. Everything
seemed possible in the name of art. New York and London were the main
centers of art, but ideas first propagated in these centers spread rapidly
across the world. "Ism's" proliferated with the utmost seriousness. Art
called "Pop", "OP", and "Minimalist" found their way into our hearts.
It was an exciting and lively time for artists, who broke new ground and
created lasting images. They had style and zest. And, behind the splash
of the media popularity their art was art as esoteric as any.
The artwork in this PSfineart collection is
representative of the most classic art typified and made memorable in
the strident sixties and the two decades immediately following. These
works, created in the social and historical context of the mood of the
times, and the unorthodox and immensely illusive affluent vigor of its
society, are artworks from a unique period in the history of art. Valued
and loved by collectors for their expressions, and their distinct and
significant aesthetic shift, this art rose out of a society's impatience
with traditional critical values. These are the social challenges responsible
for the greatest aesthetic success of art from this period.

Agam275T
Yaakov Agam. The
Fusion Suite. Edition of 200. Serigraphs. Image size is 22"
x 22 1/2" plus margins. The paper size in 27" x 27". Printed in
New York, USA. The suite, displayed in this composite page, was
acquired in 1978. These serigraphs are based on the concept of Agam's
contrapuntal paintings, and are classical representations of Agam's
life work. They demonstrate the concepts of the innovative critical
language Agam's work brought to the art world, illustrating the
changing nature of the universe, based on an appreciation and understanding
of motion and harmony. A viewer, looking Agam's work from different
angles, can identify any number of concurrent visual designs. Art
is virtually created by the viewer's eye as it moves across the
page. The concept is an art work's "constant becoming."
Each original serigraph image is signed and numbered
in pencil. The serigraphs are printed on heavy rag paper which appears
to have a slight wax finish protecting its clean white margins.
The paper has a quality the feel of a light cardboard. The nature
of the paper makes the prints suitable for floating or matting in
a traditional frame, or box. The Fusion Suite is particularly
interesting because it's combined major pieces (imagined superimposed
on each other) aesthetically complete the visual aesthetic - an
artwork simultaneously kinetic and static, the synthesis of Agam's
kinetic theory. The three major pieces from this suite are displayed
directly below: Agam173, Agam274, and the synthesis artwork, Agam275.
